naturalI was so fortunate to do Eoin Finn’s workshop when he was in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. He is my all time favourite yogi,  but what he teaches goes beyond yoga – he is a modern day hero in my eyes.

He has a way of being that just lights people up inside. He has a true gift of connecting us to ourselves, and to each other. He is just so beautifully HUMAN.

transformation through yoga

January 19, 2014 by Julia Leave a Comment

So I completed my first yoga workshop! #goaltick

I’ve done a yoga retreat before, where I delved pretty deep into my physical practice – but this was the first time I really got to expand my mind with traditional yoga ideas and philosophies – notepad and all.

yogaworkshop1

The workshop was an Introduction to Tantric Yoga – and I’ll be honest, the word ‘tantric’ was a little off putting. It immediately brought to mind something sexual, something a bit ‘R’ rated. But, as I learned, it seems this word has lost it’s true meaning.

“Based on ancient Indian and Tibetan traditions, Tantra Yoga is an energy based system that teaches us methods for consciously connecting with the Universe in order to feel, harness and amplify beneficial Universal energies within our own being; aspects such as vitality, creativity and imagination, self-confidence, love and compassion, intuition, mental concentration and spiritual lucidity.”

Tantic yoga actually has two branches 1) Hatha and 2) Kundalini. I never knew these styles were both delineated from Tantric Yoga.

“Yoga, in its authentic form, is a system that allows us to balance and harmonise not only our physical bodies but more importantly, our thoughts and emotions, bringing a state of inner calm and stability that will lead to health and healing, personal empowerment and better relationships.”

yogaworkshop2yogaworkshop3

I learnt all about traditional yoga; the chakras, correspondence and resonance, asanas, sublimation. But what really stood out to me was the personal transformation aspect of yoga.

In yoga, this personal transformation is called self realisation.  It’s the thing that fascinates me, and drives a lot of my work – the question “Who am I really?“. Its an inquiry into ourselves, into something deeper than our personalities or physical existence. It’s that sense of “I”, that is disconnected from our body or our circumstance. It’s the true ‘us’ separate from our state of mind, or identification with our thoughts or emotions. It’s our sense of self that remains constant.

Who am I?

Why am I here?

Yoga gives us the tools to start to investigate these questions.

There is a universal intelligence within us, and yoga allows us to tap into this. It can help us decipher the meaning of our lives.

How rad, that simple breath and body work can connect us to universal energy, and ultimately our life’s purpose.

HAPPINESS   =   ENQUIRY INTO THE SELF

Happiness is not outside us, which unfortunately in our culture we are lead to believe. It’s the ‘when I have’ mentality – “When I get that promotion life will be great.” “When I have the body I want I will be happy.” “When I have my overseas holiday . . .” “When I get that new car. . .” “When I find the perfect partner . . .” “When I save enough money . . .” Can you see how prevalent this way of thinking is? I know I can be guilty of it too.

It’s a perpetual cycle none different to a mouse on a wheel. The problem with this mentality though is that it puts the power outside of us, we are made to be dependant on others, or on things to bring us happiness. Instead of finding happiness within ourselves.

Self enquiry brings us freedom within ourselves. We are free beyond our minds or emotions. In yoga our minds are likened to a crazy monkey. In fact – a crazy monkey that’s been stung by a scorpion! Our minds are constantly throwing bones for us to fetch. For most, it is our minds that rule us, instead of us controlling our minds. So cultivating this enquiry into the self allows us to live mindfully, to be conscious of ourselves in the world, as opposed to constantly chasing the bones our mind throws us.

It ultimately creates a freedom from fear and inadequacy. And it’s when we step away from fear, that we allow our true selves to shine. We become more connected to our driving force, our personal mission in life.

Self realisation is the deeper aspect to our own existence.

“Dare to be free, dare to go as far as your thought leads, and dare to cary that out into your life.” – Swami Sivananda

I’ve always gained a certain sense of peace, power, and connection through my yoga practice – but this was the first time it was really explained as to WHY! Talk about the penny dropping. Wow.

Know who you are and why you are here.

Namaste.

let your light shine

August 28, 2013 by Julia 1 Comment

I love surprise inspiration and love.

It hits you without warning and brightens your day.

One of my favorite yoga teachers, Tina James, left a note with this message at the end of my mat after today’s practice:

You bring the world such joy,
In so many ways,
Like a warm, radiant sun
That brightens the days

Your beauty, your confidence
Your spirit so strong,
All shine from within
Like a wonderful song.

Your talent, your grace
The gifts that you share,
With faith and wisdom
Show the ways you care.

Your plans and dreams
For what’s yet to be . . .
Your ideas for the future,
Are the hopes shared with me,

And as we let our own light shine,
We consciously give other people
Permission to do the same.
As we’re liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically
liberates others.

Gorgeous isn’t it?

It brought the biggest smile to my face and warmth to my heart.

It was exactly what I needed to be reminded if today – I was feeling very melancholy after a tearful goodbye with my twin sister this morning. She’s on her way back to Australia after spending quality time the last 3 weeks together. I’m so grateful for receiving this message today of all days.

Tina said to pay the note forward when the time is right to pass onto another. I tend to collect and keep these kinds of things, so I’m looking forward to letting go and spreading the message. Passing it onto another who will hopefully feel what I felt when reading this today.

Expressing our joy and passion not only liberates and empowers ourselves, but it acts as an invitation for others around us to do the same.

Now that’s a win/win situation if ever I saw one!

If you needed another reason to follow your heart, this is it.

How wonderful that by living out our own dreams and letting our light shine bright, we are also being of service to others.

Contribution by default.

How are you letting your own light shine today?

finding my true north – Wanderlust

August 1, 2013 by Julia 4 Comments

Isn’t it wonderful when something completely out of the ordinary happens?

I just won a ticket to Wanderlust!!

For those that aren’t aware the Wanderlust events are:

“A one-of-a-kind festival bringing together the world’s leading yoga teachers, top musical acts and DJs, renowned speakers, top chefs and wine makers, and much, much more — all in a setting of breathtaking natural beauty.”

Check out this wicked little video package of last years Wanderlust here in Whistler. It certainly wet my appetite for what’s to come!

wanderlustwhistler

I couldn’t believe my eyes when i opened up the email, I thought have they got this right? I hadn’t even entered a competition! No it was right. Just another example of why I work for the best company in the world – lululemon athletica. Surprising and delighting with a beautiful gift, expecting nothing in return. (Turns out some of my colleagues got a free pass too which makes it even sweeter to share the experience with my beautiful team! yay!).

Wanderlust has been something I’ve viewed from a far in awe. It’s not yet in Australia, and I would see videos, images, and hear amazing stories from this far away festival, it all sounded too good to be true. I can only imagine the sense of community formed by so many people gathering together all just wanting to connect, to love, to grow and to practice together.

It has been a crazy busy couple of weeks for me, lots of travelling to the city for work, late nights, early starts, long journeys. I’m looking forward to stopping to pause. Stopping the busy-ness to re-connect to nature, to my breath, and to my spirit which always shines brighter after practicing.

My formula is pretty simple:

NATURE  +  YOGA  =  BLISS  : )

It’s time to hit the re-boot button and refresh my soul.

I have signed up to three of the most renowned international yogis – Seane Corn, Ryan Leier and Eoin Finn. What a blissful day it will be. I have had the pleasure of meeting Ryan and Eoin previously, they are two of the most beautiful human beings I’ve come across. If they are a small taste of the clientele this weekend, it’s going to be an incredible festival.

I am full of gratitude for this opportunity.

I look forward to filling you in on my wonderful Wanderlust experience.

If anyone needs me tomorrow, I’ll be on my mat.

namaste.

integrity

June 10, 2013 by Julia Leave a Comment

I recently attended my first yoga retreat. It’s been one of my goals for a while now – tick!

I felt so grateful and privileged to be there. I was a part of an amazing group of women who undertook a journey of total body and mind transformation.

When I checked into my room, I drew an affirmation from the ‘be the change’ card deck – it was Integrity.

20130610-090723-AM.jpg

This definition struck a chord with me . . . to live my truth.

I’d always thought of integrity as having strong moral principles,  and in the disciplinary sense – ‘doing what I say I will do, when I say I’m going to do it’. This affirmation shed new light on an age-old concept for me.

At the retreat we called this “dusting off” words, shaking off the restraints of old definitions, beliefs, stigmas around language, and stepping into a whole new realm of possibility. It’s literally polishing old words to be shiny and new again. This ensures our communication is always powerful because we are aligned on the meaning behind our choice of words. Interesting huh?

To me, living my truth means spreading light, joy and love.

This message empowered me on my journey through the retreat, something I reflected on and consciously acted out. I focused on ‘living my truth’ during my solitary moments of reflection, when I interacted with others, and during my yoga practice. Aligning my thoughts, words and actions. Integrity. It felt dam good.

It made me more responsible for the energy I was bringing not only to my environment, but also to myself.

I got to thinking, this is something that could benefit me every single day. I don’t have to wait to attend a special retreat to be conscious of who I am being.

We all have a choice moment to moment as to what energy we bring into the world.

We are responsible.

Don’t wait, start NOW.

How will you live your truth today?
