the G-word

December 9, 2014 by Julia Leave a Comment

goalsdeadlineDo you set goals?

Yes, I said the G-word. Now I know for some that this is a bad word, but stay with me here as I once thought it was too.

I used to think ‘goal setting’ was reserved for business executives, or elite athletes – those type A personalities that charged through life pushing for bigger and better. Now there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, I just couldn’t relate to it, it’s not who I am. I thought that goals were all stooped in ego, and greed and the insatiable desire to achieve.

the simple life

November 12, 2014 by Julia 2 Comments

livesimply

I re-wrote my goals last week. I edited, scratched out, and stripped them right back to the core.

God, it felt so liberating!

Instead of setting multiple goals in each area of my life, I just stuck to ONE. One personal, one health, one career. The most important goal to me. The ONE goal that if I DID NOT have, all the other’s would feel empty and meaningless. [Read more…]

fuel your dreams

February 25, 2014 by Julia Leave a Comment

leadbydreamsI went for  run this morning, and it triggered my memory to coaching I received from my gorgeous friend Freya (a runner herself – and I’m talking BIG-time runner – cue marathons, and mountain peak trail races.)

Freya analysed my running technique on a trail run in Whistler, and noticed my feet were striking the ground heel first, which was effectively hindering my momentum of moving forward. Because instead of using my whole power to push off the ground and spring myself forward, by landing on my heel, I was limiting my projection. [Read more…]

what do you want?

January 27, 2014 by Julia Leave a Comment

What do you want?

A better question, first of all.

Sometimes this question can be too vague to produce a meaningful and actionable answer. To take the confusion and guesswork out of it, we need to rephrase the question, to get specific about what we want in our life.

Most people focus on the things they don’t want in life, and it comes in the form of complaint – about jobs, relationships or health/appearance. But when you ask people what they do want often all we receive is a blank stare or a vague response. We have become so used to thinking about all the things we don’t want, that it’s clouding our ability to envision what we do want.

“Life pretty much gives you what you ask from it. Most people want to feel better, have more energy or live with greater satisfaction. Yet, when you ask them to tell you precisely what it is they want, they have no answer. You change your life the moment you set your goals and start to seek out your Dharma.” – Robin Sharma

If you aren’t clear on what you want, how do you know where to start, or when you have achieved it? Without setting the goal posts, scoring is near impossible.

Focus on where you want to go in life and success will follow.

One of my favourite teachers is Susanne Conrad. She created an exercise based on the law of attraction, and it’s designed to get you clear on what you want in your life. It has been a valuable exercise for me personally, and one that I continue to use in my coaching.

It’s a great starting point before beginning to create your Vision and Goals. A way to get you clear on whats authentically important to you. I want to share it with you here so you can complete it in the comfort of your own home.

So put the kettle on, grab a notebook and get comfy. Let’s get started on creating your dream life!

The Power Of Knowing What You Want

Prep:

  • Put away all distractions.
  • Sit comfortably, close your eyes and take a couple of slow deep breaths down into your belly.
  • I want you to think ahead to the future.
  • Anything is possible.
  • There are no constraints of time, money or knowledge.
  • You can be, do and have anything your heart desires.

Try that for me. Really try to free your mind from the restraints of past experiences, failures, judgement. Clear any self-limiting beliefs you are holding onto. Let your imagination grow with the power of possibility. . .

Method:

  • Draw a big circle on a blank page
  • Inside the circle write the word ‘WANT’, outside the circle write the words ‘DON’T WANT’
  • Inside the circle write everything you want in your life, and outside the circle you write everything you don’t want.
  • They can be tangible things like –  ‘a house in the mountains’ or ‘CEO of a company’, but also things that are intrinsic such as –  how you want to feel, your character, your peace of mind. They can be big things such as ‘to cure cancer’, or as small as ‘to have my own veggie patch’. Include all of the things you want, leave nothing out.
  • Brainstorm as many words as you can, just let them flow out onto the page.
  • *Note – be weary of writing the word ‘happy’. We all want to be happy, but what brings you happiness? Focus on the specific activities, people, actions etc that are the cause of your happiness.

loa

“Anyone who wishes to improve the quality of their inner as well as their outer worlds would do well to take out a piece of paper and start writing out their life aims. At the very moment that this is done, natural forces will come into play that start to transform these dreams into reality.” – Robin Sharma

  • Acknowledge the words outside of the circle, and then let them slowly melt away. Feel their grip over you lessen. Feel the weight lifted and freedom created by letting go of your fears and worries.
  • Now focus all your attention inside the circle.
  • These are the things, feelings, activities and relationships you need to focus on now.

Keep your bubble of goodness somewhere you can see daily.

Look at it first thing when you wake up to remind yourself of what you’re committed to.

What can you do today to bring something inside your bubble to life?

clarity

“By writing out your desires and goals on a pice of paper, you send a red flag to your subconscious mind that these thoughts are far more important than the remaining 59,999 other ones. Your mind will then start to seek out all opportunities to realise your destiny like a guided missile. It is really a very scientific process. Most of us are simply not aware of it.” – Robin Sharma

new year, new you

January 6, 2014 by Julia Leave a Comment

As I close the door on 2013, and look at the fresh slate laying before me for 2014 – I can’t help but brim with possibility.

There’s something magical about fresh starts. It reminds me of the start of the school year when I was younger. Getting a fresh uniform (probably a little too big), brand new books, contacting said books, fresh stationary, polished school shoes, and a new hair cut to match! Everything was new, eyes were bright, mind was clear, and the future was exciting. Who were my teachers going to be? What new friends will I make? What adventures will I go on?

And decades later, things haven’t changed much – I have a new blank diary in front of me, a sense of wonderment for the new year ahead, and even a fresh new hair cut! (Yes, I cut it all off – talk about a literal new beginning!)

After revisiting my 10 year vision, and reflecting & celebrating my 2013 goals – it’s now time to turn over a new page.

To dream and create. To start the new year with fresh and exciting goals.

“All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.” – Brian Tracy

This is a time to really stand in possibility – if anything was possible for you next year, what would you want to happen? Say it out loud, write it down – start to believe you can have it, and set the wheels in motion through the law of attraction.

newyearnewyou

What were your highlights of this year? What were the low points? How can you bring even more highlights into 2014?

What do you want to focus on and how do you want to spend your time?

What goals do you need to set to make this happen?

Want to change your life? Then do it. You are the only person in control of your destiny.

You are more powerful than you know. And it’s far easier than you think! True life change is spontaneous –

“It happens in the blink of an eye, the very moment you decide from the deepest core of your being that you will raise your life to its highest level. In that instant, you will be a changed person, one set on the course of his destiny.” – Robin Sharma

This is not the time for resolutions. When was the last time you kept your NYE resolution anyway? . . . Thought so.

Resolutions generally get thrown out along with the dried up christmas tree every year.

And it’s not that we don’t have good intentions. Infact we have the BEST intentions, but resolutions are setting us up for failure. They are generally set from a mind frame of punishment, ie/ lose 20 kilos, cut out chocolate, quit smoking, – they are set in the negative, and tend to focus on things to stop/quit/reduce, as opposed to creating something brand new from a positive mind frame.

Goals on the other hand, are directly linked to your core values, and to your life vision. They are specific, measurable, realistic and timely – meaning you know when you’ve hit the mark! They are far more rewarding and satisfying than an ellusive resolution, that, 9 times out of 10 only makes us feel like a failure before we even start.

It’s time for some serious GOAL SETTING.

Put aside one day this week where you can have some down-time. Make an appointment with yourself for some ‘me’ time. Spend some time reflecting on the year that’s been, and really start to envisage the year ahead in detail.

Where do you want to be this time next year?

How are you going to love your life in 2014?

Who are you committed to being from this day onwards?

“From tonight onwards, take complete control of your life. Decide, one and for all, to be the master of your fate. Run your own race. Discover your calling and you will start to experience the extacy of an inspired life. Finally, always remember that what lies behind you and what lies in front of you is nothing when compared to what lies within you.”  – Robin Sharma

’tis the season to celebrate goals!

December 20, 2013 by Julia Leave a Comment

As another year draws to an end, it naturally becomes a time in our lives for reflection.

Is it just me, or do the years actually speed up every year? I’m sure they do, there must be some logical explanation, like the earth must rotate at increasing speed or something. . . how is it less than 5 days till Christmas already?!

And because the time goes by so quickly, and we lead our lives at such a fast pace, I’m a big fan of taking time out. I put time aside for me, for solitude and some down time. Where I can have peace and quiet, alone, with no distractions, and can sit peacefully with my thoughts for personal reflection.

I mostly do this in my morning meditation, but I also love setting time aside regularly to journal, to think, to dream and to tap back into myself. Today was one of those days. I took my goal book and a pen to the beach, and reflected on the year that was. I now feel proud of what I’ve achieved, and invigorated by the possibilities for the year to come!

So cast your mind back to this time last year.  .  . How were you feeling? Where were you? What were your goals for 2013?

Reflect on the last 12 months, how has the year been for you?

Ask yourself –

  • what did I achieve, both personally and professionally?
  • What were my biggest successes?
  • my hardest failures?
  • What’s the most important lesson I learned?
  • What are you most grateful for in 2013?

Take some time now to write down your answers.

“Take pride in how far you’ve come, and have faith in how far you can go.”

As I think back over the year that’s been, I realise how massive it was for me personally. There have been big highs and lows. But as I sit here today, back home after a long whirl-wind journey across the globe, I am so happy for where I have landed. I feel as though I am exactly where I need to be. That is a wonderful feeling.

I ticked some big goals off my list this past year. But it’s only on reflection that I realise that. Once I achieve a goal, I’m always so eager to get started on the next one! I don’t often take the time to really acknowledge myself, and give myself a pat on the back.

Celebrating our successes is such an integral ingredient to goal setting. Yet one that we often skimp out on (me included).

Well enough of that. Achieving our goals is pretty dam fantastic, and I’m going to celebrate them here with you! Here’s what’s getting a BIG TICK on my goal list:

2013 Goal Crushes

Personal:

  • travelled south america; trekked to Machu Piccu, adventured through the amazon jungle, and sailed the Galapagos Islands
  • lived overseas in Canada
  • saw three more natural wonders – Iguazu Falls, Niagara Falls & the Grand Canyon
  • celebrated my 30th birthday with my twin sister in North America
  • did my first U.S.A road trip!

Career:

  • began my first blog
  • started my own business
  • lead Vision & Goal workshops at primary and secondary schools

Health:

  • attended my first yoga retreat
  • conquered crow pose (yay!)
  • started my own meditation & yoga practice
  • learnt how to snowboard

Wow – it has been a big year! And the best bit? I like who I’m becoming in the pursuit of my goals.

The goals I set for myself this year really pushed me to grow, to develop, and to expand myself.

Reviewing and reflecting (and of course – CELEBRATING!) our goals is an important step in goal setting. It get’s us connected to where we have been, where we are now, and also get’s us clear on where we want to go.

So what are you celebrating for 2013?

Let the confetti reign, and that champagne POP!

You are freakin awesome!

celebrate

Celebrate your victories, you fought hard to get here.

10 steps to rock your life

November 21, 2013 by Julia Leave a Comment

Want to increase your quality of your life?

Achieve some really big goals?

Check out these rad ideas by Christine Comaford-Lynch. . .

10 STEPS TO BUILD YOUR MOMENTUM

1.  Rock responsibility. Say bye bye to blaming others because your life isn’t working or you don’t have what you want. Ditto for complaining, which is blame disguised. You’re no ones victim. Everything in our lives, good or bad, is the result of our actions or thoughts. When we take 100% responsibility for our lives were acknowledging this, which then enables us to improve our situation. Responsibility is an active pursuit.

2.  Get visual. Visualise your goals being achieved and act on making them happen. Your goals should include what you want to achieve, and a by-when date. Keep track of how you’re progressing. It will work wonders in focusing yourself and keeping you on track.

3.  Solicit superb support. A supportive tribe is necessary to getting stuff done. Two ways are a) an accountability partner, or b) a master mind group. An accountability partner is a friend or colleague who will help you stay accountable to your commitments. A mastermind group is a group of like mined people who help further one another’s goals on a group basis.

4.  Toss toxicity. You probably have some toxic people in your life right now. They’re the folks who seem to want to hold you back or bring you down. Know anyone who actively hampers your ability to advance? They’re deflators, energy vampires. You can choose to ignore them or let their negativity bounce off you. If you’re not sure if someone is toxic, just monitor how you feel after spending time with them. Feel furious? Exhausted? Despondent? You’ve got a life one: get out of the isolation suit!

5.  Pump up the positive. Use only positives when you talk to yourself about your goals. Negative self talk fosters a negative self image, which results in negative behaviours. We sabotage ourselves far more than anyone sabotages us, (‘see? I knew they wouldn’t hire me/ask me out/give me the award.’). List your strengths. Don’t list your shortcomings; instead, reframe them as strengths you want to develop. Another way to accentuate the positive is to read inspiring books, listen to uplifting motivating CD’s or podcasts. Surround yourself with upbeat energy.

6.  Log onto the Law Of Attraction. You’ve heard the saying ‘what you focus on, you become’ – thats the idea of the law of attraction. When you develop a clear idea of what you want, focus on it, and feel good about it, your mind will consider your wishes to be marching orders. The universe will conspire to help to make your dreams come true. This is why you have to know what you want, look at images of what you want, imagine yourself already having it, and do the work required to make your dreams come true. As Norman Vincent Peale put it, “formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture.“

7.  Persevere. You’re probably going to have a healthy number of so-called failures and rejection your career and life. The key is how you view them and whether you let them hold you back. I think of failures as ‘learning adventures’ to reduce their negative impact. As Henry Ford said, ‘Failure gives us the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.” Its ok to be afraid, and its certainly okay to fail, and everybody gets rejected. Prepare for these inevitable knocks.

8.  Pay attention. One of the fundamental attitudes you need to cultivate is constantly paying attention to whats going on around you. That may seem obvious, but its not just about focusing closely on what you’re doing. Sometimes when your concentrating on what you’re doing, you miss the important stuff. While you’re concentrating on the cracks in the sidewalk, you miss the rainbow. We are all oblivious at times, but the more you increase your attention to life, the more present you are, the more you’ll notice opportunities. Cultivate the ability to laser focus and scan your surroundings.

9.  Continuously course-correct. We all make mistakes. The more honest we are, the more likely well avoid mistakes or recognise them immediately and be able to clean them up quickly. The more we clean up our messes, the less guilt, regret, or baggage we have, the lighter our load is, and the easier it becomes to rise above petty issues and see more clearly. Clearer vision results in better decisions.

10.  Celebrate success. You took the risks, now celebrate the reward. What’s a compelling way to reward yourself? That’s your motivation. Celebration will make the work worth it.
